A 27+ year veteran of the insurance industry, Ricardo has developed a uniquely holistic view of the business. His leadership roles in underwriting, risk analysis, and loss prevention with some of Canada’s largest insurance companies set the stage for his transition to becoming a broker, ultimately starting his own brokerage from the ground up.  That brokerage is now a member of one of the fastest growing broker groups in Canada which is in turn a partner in Assurex Global – the largest privately-held insurance broker group on the planet.  

Giving back to an industry that has given so much to him, Ricardo also spent the past 10 years as Faculty in the School of Business within BCIT’s General Insurance & Risk Management Program having designed the curriculum for the Program’s “Business Strategy for Insurance Operations” course.  He is Past President of the BC Society of Fellows of the Insurance Institute of Canada and often relied on as an expert witness in insurance coverage litigation cases.   

This breadth of experience and commitment to the industry equips Ricardo with a deep understanding of areas where efficiencies can be gained throughout the insurance value chain as well as opportunities to improve the overall insurance buying experience.  As a tech geek at heart, he’s extremely excited to lead Dbunk in its efforts to accelerate digital transformations across the insurance industry.

Over the past 22 years, Marty has held key technical roles as a solution architect, technology consultant, product manager, and software developer.  From large corporations to fledgling startups, his extensive experience spans industries such as e-commerce, manufacturing, aerospace, medical, finance, and insurance.  Marty is passionate about bringing unique, innovative solutions to market, and leading the highly performant teams that develop them.      

His career started in the early years of the World Wide Web, while still a student earning his Computer Science Degree at the University of British Columbia. He was an early employee of WebCT (later acquired by BlackBoard), coding one of the world’s first web based learning management systems used by over 10 million higher education students in 80 countries. Since then, he has honed his technical and leadership expertise, working at companies like IBM, Scotiabank, and Finning, building everything from small web and mobile consumer applications to large scale enterprise backend systems.

This experience also includes 5 years with TuGo, one of the largest travel insurance providers in Canada. Bringing Lean Startup to the enterprise, Marty helped cultivate an innovation culture that contributed to the company’s digital transformation, enhancing its partnership with brokers, redefining its relationship with its insured travellers, and changing the way travel insurance is sold. This included spearheading the TuGo API Platform for brokers and licensed aggregators to quote and sell TuGo products, launching a partner portal for brokers to track performance and optimize sales, and a traveller portal for insureds to manage their policies and claims while increasing upselling and renewal rates.

With Dbunk, he’s looking forward to continue innovating in the insurance industry, empowering insurers and brokers with new ways of bringing their products and expertise to market.
